Dota Hero Strategy: Puck - Faerie Dragon

Introduction

Puck is incredibly versatile with blink, silence, AOE, stun and is relatively well rounded for an Intelligence hero. Capable of destroying enemies in a blaze of magic with devastating combos. Puck has instantly become a favorite Intelligence hero of mine. Hope you have as much fun with him as i do.

Status

Range: 600 | Move Speed: 295
Primary: INT
Str: 15 + 1.7 | Agi: 22 + 1.7 | Int: 25 + 2.4
Damage: 38 - 49 | HP: 435 | Mana: 325
Attack Speed: | Armor: 2

Skills

Illusory Orb (R)
Sends a magic orb flying down a straight path damaging everything in its way. At any time during the life of the orb the Faerie Dragon may teleport up to it, taking its place. 1800 Range, 225 AOE.
Level 1 - Deals 70 damage.
Level 2 - Deals 140 damage.
Level 3 - Deals 210 damage.
Level 4 - Deals 280 damage.
Mana Cost:
Cooldown: 15
Comment: The starter of the combo, good for chasing, initiating, ganking (ganging up on 1 or several opponents), escaping and probing. All in all, a highly versatile skill with decent damage, long range and a blink like effect. Good for positioning Wanning Rift in the combo. More on positioning, chasing and escaping later.

Wanning Rift (W)
Releases Puck's mystical faeire dust around him dealing damage and silencing enemies. 400 AOE.
Level 1 - Deals 60 damage and Silences for 0.1 seconds.
Level 2 - Deals 120 damage and Silences for 1 second.
Level 3 - Deals 180 damage and Silences for 2 seconds.
Level 4 - Deals 240 damage and Silences for 3 seconds.
Mana Cost: 100/110/120/130
Cooldown: 10
Comment: The second part of the combo. AOE, silences and damages, can't ask for much more. Highly effective against spell casters, who tend to panic when they cant use there spells, and can often stop opponents escaping (blinkers and wind walkers).

Phase Shift (F)
Shifts the Faerie Dragon out of existence for a brief period, temporarily avoiding any further damage.
Level 1 - Up to 0.75 seconds.
Level 2 - Up to 1.5 seconds.
Level 3 - Up to 2.25 seconds.
Level 4 - Up to 3 seconds.
Mana Cost: 50/40/30/20
Cooldown: 6
Comment: An extremely annoying spell for your opponents. You become invulnerable and near invisible as long as you don't - attack, move or cast a spell. Can be used to trick enemies who you are fleeing from, or to avoid massive damage spells (Finger of Death, Laguna Blade) and can be used effectively in conjunction with Illusory Orb when escaping. More on this later.

Dream Coil (C)
Puck's powerful imagination engulfs an area, creating coils of volatile magic that damages and stuns enemy units as it latches on to them. Stretching the coils beyond 600 range causes it to snap and deal additional damage and stun time. Lasts 5 seconds.
Level 1 - Initial: 100 damage and 0.5 seconds stun. Coil Break: 100 damage and 1.5 seconds stun.
Level 2 - Initial: 150 damage and 0.5 seconds stun. Coil Break: 150 damage and 2.25 seconds stun.
Level 3 - Initial: 200 damage and 0.5 seconds stun. Coil Break: 200 damage and 3 seconds stun.
Mana Cost: 100/150/200
Cooldown: 85
Comment: The finisher of the combo. Gives you the one thing you don't have - a stun. Most opponents will panic and break the coils giving them more damage and more time for you or your teammates to kill them. Making it very good for chasing.

Early Game (levels 1-8)

Pros:
-very good intelligence gain.
-synergy with lots of other heroes.
-synergy with some great items.
-a combo which will work on most heroes.
-incredibly versatile with all spells.

Cons:
-very low hp early.
-takes some practice to use spells effectively
-can be the target of ganks often. (if owning)
-kind of low agi and str gain. (skadi and linkins fix this)

The main focuses of early game are:

-Control the lane.
-Deny and Last hit creeps.
-Possibly get a kill. (once you hit level 7 not really a problem)

The first 2 on that list are relatively easy.( as long as you have had practice)

When not trying to kill, do the first 2, farm as much as possible early game.
Not pushing too far as you might get ganked. If your going back to base
and have a lot of Mana still, go and farm Neutrals.

By the end of Early Game you should have a few kills and an Inventory like this:

Power Treads, 2 or 3 Null Talisman and Plate Mail

Mid Game (level 8 - 16)

Your main priorities of Middle Game should be to:

-Gank with allies.
-Duel and Defeat Opponents. (1v1)
-Escape Bad Situations.
-Farm Neutrals.
-Farm Lanes.
-Buy Key Items.
-Push with Allies. (Puck isn't a very strong pusher really)
-And maybe kill Roshan with your allies.

Ganking with allies will come naturally if you time your combo correctly.

After Middle Game you should have farmed Shiva's Guard and even Eye of Skadi

Your original combo is now extended with Shiva's Guard and you can now chase very well with the help of the Eye of Skadi.

Late Game (levels 16 - 25)

If you and your team are really owning i doubt the game will go into Late Game mode.
But just in case it does heres a quick priorities list:

-Push and Win with Allies.
-Defend hard.
-Gank when needed.
-Farm Heaps.(including Neutrals)
-Kill Roshan.(if your team already hasn't)
-Finish A.S.A.P. (before Troll, Void and those kinda of heroes become scary.)

Conclusion

Do remember, The teamwork is the most important in DOTA.

  • My guide peace :) Wanning rift is best maximized if you use it as a combo with Illusory Orb (R) and dream coil.you should not also auto cast phase shift. Puck is a very powerful int hero especially early game and against lowhp heroes like kardel, lina, lich etc.Puck is also very strong on 5on5 battles if you know how to use him. Heres the proper way to use puck (3on3,4on4,5on5)..on the early game go solo on middle lane if you could ask the permission of your team m8s.It dont matter if your up against 2heroes on your lane with the proper strategy u can kill them both separately or maybe get a double kill!,heres how: get 5 clarity ,2 potion and as much ironwood branches as u can. lvl 1 Illusory orb,lvl 2 wanning rift, lvl 3 orb,lvl 4 rift, lvl 5 orb lvl6 dream coil.lvl 7 rift, lvl 8 orb,lvl 9 rift,lvl10 phase shift.lvl 11 dream coil, lvl 12 - phase.lvl 13-15 stats, lvl 16 dream coil, lvl 17-23 stats,23-25 shift..stay in ur lane and dont use any skill until lvl 3..use orb and make sure to hit the heroes along the way..continue doing this or u can w8 until lvl 5 so ur orb would be lvl 3..use ur clarity and potion wisely.u could kill a hero when ur enemies hp is already low or below half..just use orb then teleport to exactly where he is standing and use rift.hes already silenced and cant do nothing but run then use ur dream coil if u already have one and then viola! instant kill..If u have two heroes on ur lane just be careful and make sure that both of ur enemys hp are low before doing the combo..Phase shift is also useful when ur being chased by enemies just use orb then phse shift(invisible)then teleport to the orb then ur out of harms way..when escaping target ur orb near trees or palces where u can instantly escape.shift is only level 2 so that u can teleport to the orb in time.use orb first then shift then teleport. As for the items it depends on ur preference.I usually go for shivas guard.. treads, skadi and tarasque if the games not yet finished..remember puck has very low hp so u have to master the art of escaping and timing when to use ur combo..remember also when theres a clash always stay behind and wisely use ur combo.u could also use the combo for chasing enemies..last of all..use ur dreamcoil cuz it has a very short cooldown tym.

  • i disagree with your item build greatly, puck has a relatively LOW str gain, thus needs hp early especially if you are going to be utilizing your 3 skills efficiently. i would say get 1-2 bracers at start, treads is a true waste on any intel hero, they dont need the 10 stat bonus and attack speed, boots of travel allows him to farm around much more efficiently.
    so heres the item build
chicken (unless someone on your team is ur bitch and buys it and shares)
2 bottles (not the 600 gold one, the 100 non reusable)
    2 bracers
    boots
    void stone
    travels
    mystic staff
    ultimate orb
    then go for a shivas
if game still isnt over get an orchid, giving u 2 silence skills, hex and a stunning ultimate, this really allows u to disable a single hero or mulitple heros at once, shiva also is good for an aoe slow really making puck a scary hero in a gank, this will also make u a primary target so get ur finger on phase shift ready.
his skills all are used for ganking and if you can time everything correctly you can own heros in any gank.

  • did u ever saw puck kill the wolf tha has satanic sange&sasha treads and heart. the puck items are hex chivas heart treads.. this is how it goes u do orb rift and chivas then u do shift u come back u hex u hit hit hit u shift u come back u rift and orb a rift a bit further u shift again u come back after 1-2 sec hex is ready again u hex u do chivas u hit hit hit.. this goes like 2-3 times and almost any heroe is dead.. u can try it bad u must be really skillfull to do all this in good timing

  • pfeh! hate the item builds here. why dont ya use desolator, cuirass(or hyperstone), travel, perseverance(you may not transform this item) dagon(even level 1 is enough). here's the thing. go orb then blink. use rift and hit it. if the enemy runs. use coil. the stun should be long enough to kill the enemy. remember. your using deso and cuirass(or hyperstone) here. if an ally of yours wants to get a last hit. use dagon. go farm and when you sense your too close to gankable territory, use travel and farm someplace else.

Note: the earlier you get perseverance and travel the better.

    by desolator - 8/9/2008 8:02:22 PM
  • yoh dude desolator! your missing the early game equips. might as well get one null for mana sustainability eh??? btw i love your item build. definately suits my style. high dps late game int hero. sweet.

  • ummm. . . can Puck be turned into a 'hybrid type?. . . I mean if you look at its agility stats, it is more CLOSER TO pUCK'S INT STAT THAN the str stat. . .

So just asking. . . .is it ok for me to focus on puck's Int and Agi stat??. . .

    by Ej Malata - 6/17/2009 6:38:03 AM
  • Umm. . . im here again. . .

For me, as I have observed, no matter how much health you add to puck, it is still lower compared to the HP of other heroes . . cause theyll also buy health giving items. . . . .hmmmm. . .

Just checking opinion. . no need for insults, thank you. . .

umm bye the way, Im still a rookie. . . at Dota i mean...

Heres my item build. . .2 Slippers of Agility, Power Threads, Shiva's guard, Linken's Sphere, Diffusal Blade, Mjonir. . .

    by EJ Malata - 6/17/2009 6:43:43 AM
  • Puck can kill alone roshan and that build is stupid i use thisbuild ...Phase boots BLoodstone HoT Cuiras Buriza and Orchid/Guinsoo/Blademail(if is damage deler i do blade mail if he use magic i use orchid if escape easy i use guinsoo O_O)

    by PinkAssassin - 7/21/2009 7:52:15 AM
  • I play puck all the time.

2 bracers, phase boots, dagon or shiva

    If game goes on, HoT.

    by Lonjaxson - 7/24/2009 6:42:47 PM
  • Phase Shift at lvl 14 wtf?
It's your key ability to surviving. Doubles your health at rank 1 if you use it right and is your counter to almost every damage spell thrown at you.
Get it rank 1 at level 2 and then save the remaining ranks for later.
